Karnataka government has decided to convene an all party meeting on April 17 and 18 to seek opinion on the draft amendments proposed to the Panchayat Raj Act to usher in further reforms towards achieving higher degree of decentralisation of power. The government has prepared the draft amendments as suggested by the 10-member working group on decentralisation, minister for rural development and Panchayat Raj M Y Ghorpade told a press conference.
If there was consensus among all parties at the coming meeting, government proposed to introduce a comprehensive amendment bill in the next legislature session.
Ghorpade said government was thinking of raising existing term of office bearers from 20 months to five years.
