Nagpur, Aug 19: Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission has ordered the concerned government departments and district administration to submit their replies on the alleged starvation deaths of Kolam Tribals in Yavatmal recently. A division bench comprising C L Thool and M R Patil, adjourning the case to September 18, has decided to inquire into a petition of an NGO, Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti, in this regard.

The respondents have been asked to submit their replies in the affidavits within four weeks, the NGO said releasing a copy of the SHRC order. The samiti has petitioned that 35 Kolam Tribals died of starvation and malnutrition within a span of 20 days in June this year.

The NGO contended that 'right to food' has been denied to them due to gross negligence and failure of respondent authorities in Yavatmal district.

Quoting apex court order of November 2001 over starvation deaths, the samiti headed by Kishore Tiwari, told SHRC that Kolam Tribals are primitive scheduled tribes, living in most neglected and isolated areas in Yavatmal and other places and are Below Poverty Line (BPL). The NGO alleged that deaths were caused due to apathy and irresponsible conduct of responsible officers. It has urged SHRC to grant suitable compensation to the next of kin of deceased.
