Cairo, Dec 1: The US ambassador to Egypt, David Welch, was stalked over the weekend by a pick-up truck that slipped between his car and his police protection on the Sinai peninsula, a US embassy spokesman said. The pick-up truck drove up between the ambassador's car and one of his Egytian police escorts yesterday before "security chased him off" as he drove north from Sharm el-Sheikh to the Suez Canal, said embassy spokesman Philip Frayne.

In a strange twist, when Welch's convoy pulled up at a gas station later, the pick-up truck turned up again.
When one of the ambassador's four Egyptian bodyguards approached the driver, "he drove away at high speed," said Frayne.
The incident remains unexplained, the spokesman said, who refused to comment over whether the driver was possibly probing the security protection around the us ambassador.
Both the US and Israel have been on a heightened state of alert after a car bombing and failed missile attack on Thursday claimed 16 lives, including three Israelis, in Mombasa, Kenya on Thursday.
