Kohima, Feb 09: Lack of proper conservation efforts coupled with casual attitude of the forest officials has, of late, triggered severe threats to the inmates of Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Jorhat district, home to seven different species of primates. Situated at a distance of 17 km from Jorhat town, Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique habitat of primates and a place of definite sighting of the only ape in the country- the Hollock Gibbon.
Apart from the illegal land encroachment, which has been prevalent since long, felling of trees, destruction of bushes and grass have affected the ecological balance of the forest severely. Hit by the food shortage, the animals, especially the elephants, tend to go out of the forest and create menace.
It is learnt that so far the pachyderms had taken 45 human lives in the frequent depredations in the last two decades, thanks to the state forest department the only duty seems to provide a few fire crackers and a little kerosene.
Haunted by the frequent depredations, which have inflicted considerable damage in the region, the inhabitants are always on tenterhooks fearing further attacks.
Moreover, stealthy activities of poachers, fishermen and lumberjacks are also reported at times. Grass, young bamboos, exotic species of trees are disappearing from the forest at random.
