Beijing, Sept 16: China has agreed to lease a pair of giant pandas to Thailand for ten years where local scientists would study artificial breeding of the highly endangered species. The four-year-old Chuang Chuang and two-year-old Lin Hui will live in Chiangma zoo in Thailand, according to the China giant panda protection research centre in southwest China's Sichuan province, the state media reported.

They were leased by the Thailand government for scientific research on the artificial breeding of pandas for a period of at least 10 years, vice director of the centre, Zhang Guiquan said. Chuang Chuang, the male weighs 106 kilograms, and Lin Hui, the female, is around 60 kilograms. They were born in the centre and have been together for two years, and enjoyed a friendly relationship, Zhang said.

Thailand will pay the centre and report the feeding and health situations of the two pandas, he said. The centre, jointly set up in 1980 by the Chinese government and the World Wildlife Wund (WWF), now has 67 artificially bred giant pandas.
