COAI council to meet in mid-Oct for strategy on MSC order

New Delhi, Oct 06: Even as it has decided to appeal against an earlier telecom tribunal order that allowed WLL services, COAI's executive council is likely to meet around
October 20 to decide its strategy on the latest TDSAT verdict relating to technology to be used for WLL mobility.
According to Cellular Operators' Association of India
sources, the executive council may discuss the future course
of action on September 27 verdict of Telecom Dispute
Settlement and Appellate Tribunal on mobile switching centres
(MSCs).
Sources indicated that while an appeal in the latest order was "likely", no decision had yet been taken by COAI on the issue.
"There certainly seems to be a lack of clarity in certain aspects. The judgement says infrastructure by basic operators must confirm to WLL systems, and this according to us means no MSC. However, the TDSAT has not struck down MSC switches," sources said adding this was not acceptable to COAI.
COAI's executive council has already decided to go for an appeal in the supreme court against a majority judgement of TDSAT dated August 8, 2003 permitting WLL mobility to basic operators.
The timing for approaching the apex court has, however, not yet been finalised.
