Moscow, Feb 13: Russia has expressed its support for the measures proposed by US President George W. Bush, to fight the clandestine spread of nuclear technology to manufacture weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Commenting on Bush's plan, Russian Atomic Energy Minister, Alexander Rumyantsev, said yesterday that Russia ''enthusiastically approves'' the American President on every point of his speech, concerning nuclear non-proliferation.
''I offer my support to Mr Bush on every item,'' he said while referring to the American President's warning against weapons of mass destruction falling into the hands of terrorists or rogue states.
''This is an extremely serious statement, which demands discussion. An international understanding must be worked out to prevent terrorist access to whatever fission materials,” a news agency quoted the minister as saying.
On Russian-Iranian nuclear cooperation, Rumyantsev said that ''the United States is certainly criticising us, and does not think we ought to cooperate with Iran. Russia has not violated any of its international pledges in its partnership with Iran, so we cannot agree to quit that market.''
Meanwhile, Rumyantsev has postponed his visit to Iran scheduled to take place on February 15 on ''technical reasons.''
The sides are expected to sign contracts soon on the return of the spent nuclear fuel to Russia from the Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Station, being built by Russian experts. There remained some differences on pricing the fuel Iran will be purchasing, he said. Bureau Report
