Ottawa, Jan 09: Canada urged New Delhi to scrap plans to test a range of missiles over the next few days.

The proposed tests, which India announced on Wednesday, would include a shorter-range version of the Agni nuclear-capable missile.
"Canada deeply regrets that India is once again planning to test nuclear-capable ballistic missiles, particularly at a time when tensions with Pakistan remain high," Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham said in a statement released late on Wednesday.

"We fear that these tests will exacerbate tensions in an already volatile region and detract from constructive efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution. Canada strongly urges India not to conduct these missile flight tests."

When Canada held the presidency of the Group of Eight major nations last year, Graham focused his efforts on trying to defuse tensions between India and Pakistan.
Canada imposed sanctions on both nations after they tested nuclear devices in May 1998 but has since lifted the measures, making clear it wanted to boost political and trade ties with India.
