Kolkata, Nov 08: City Mayor Subrata Mukherjee today said the CPI (M), instead of blocking developmental works initiated by the Trinamool Congress-BJP combine, should undertake major works for a healthy competition. Mukherjee, who heads the TC-BJP ruled city municipal corporation, said at the foundation-laying ceremony of a 3.5 million gallon water reservoir and booster pumping station that the CPI (M) had been trying to undermine the projects taken up by KMC.

"If the CPI (M) wants to compete, let them initiate a larger project than ours for the benefit of the people," Mukherjee said after the foundation-laying ceremony of the Rs 19 crore project.

The project, being executed by construction major L&T, is stipulated to be completed within 15 months.

Claiming that his party did not look at party affiliation of a person for giving water supply, the mayor said the local CPI (M) councillor did not attend the ceremony though the project was coming up in his area. The water projects taken up by the KMC in the last three years would look after the needs of people of the city and suburbs for the next three decades, Mukherjee said adding that a new 100 million gallon reservoir was coming up at Palta Waterworks in addition to its existing capacity.

Chairman of KMC Anil Mukherjee and Mayor -in-Council, water, Sobhan Chatterjee also spoke at the foundation laying ceremony, which was attended by Union Minister and local MP Mamata Banerjee. Bureau Report
