Denpasar (Indonesia), July 26: The establishment of an Asean parliament on the lines of the European parliament is not timely yet, it was agreed at the meeting of the Asean Inter-parliamentary Organisation (Aipo-Asean) here. The national interest of each of the Asean countries is different from one another, hence a common parliament like that of Europe is not yet feasible, chairman of the Aipo-Asean's inter-parliamentary cooperation committee, Saban Sirait, of Indonesia, said here yesterday. Saban Sirait said special preparations, including thorough studies into the common parliamentary systems, should be made before forming a joint Asean parliament. This (study) includes possibility of holding simultaneous general elections in all Asean countries. "So we are not yet ready for having a common Asean parliament. But studies on that matter should be continued and be evaluated every year," Saban Sirait said.

Also discussed in the Asean-Aipo meeting was preparation of drafts for a wider scale Aipo-Asean meeting which is scheduled for September this year.
