New Delhi, June 23: As the Centre asked her government to "undo" the damage, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today was on the defensive over the controversial construction near Taj and Agra Fort asserting that she would not spare anyone and would even terminate the services of the officials involved.
"There is no difference between the views of the Centre and the state government on the issue. We are working as per the directions of the Centre and the orders of the Supreme Court,” Mayawati said addressing a press conference here.
Stating that the inquiry ordered by her in the matter would be completed "as early as possible", she said that she would take stern action against the officials involved and would even terminate their services.
Asked how was it possible that her government had given some Rs 30 crore for the construction without the project getting central approval, Mayawati said that it was for the inquiry to probe into the matter.
The press conference also saw the chief minister threatening a journalist to take legal action against him if he insinuated her involvement in the matter saying the charge was "totally baseless". The scribe apologised saying he had no such intention while asking the question.
To a query whether the controversy showed that she has no control over the bureaucracy, she suggested that if someone has such an impression, he should await her action after the receipt of the inquiry report.
Mayawati's comments came close on the heels of tourism and culture minister Jagmohan, a day after his visit to Agra, asked the Uttar Pradesh government to "undo" the damage caused near the world heritage sites due to the construction.
