Gandhinagar, Feb 24: The Gujarat Legislative Assembly was today adjourned by Speaker Mangalbhai Patel for two hours amidst acrimonious scenes even as the state Finance Minister Vajubhai Vala presented Rs 7,337 crore estimates for vote-on-account for March-July 2004. The ruckus started no sooner than the debate on vote-on-account began during the morning session of the house. Congress legislators led by leader of the opposition Amarsinh Chaudhary alleged that the state government had favoured the Essar group by reducing the sales tax on compressed natural gas (CNG) in return for the favour of sponsoring the kite festival during 'Uttarayan'. The opposition legislators alleged that in government's decision would benefit the Essar group by about Rs 25 crore, while it paid only about Rs seven crore as sponsor of the kite festival. Intervening in the heated debate, Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Vala asked the opposition leaders to provide documents supporting the allegation so that the government could institute an inquiry, if necessary. However, Choudhary said it was not an allegation but truth. Now, it is for the government to disapprove, he said. Vala said it was not just a government decision to reduce the sales tax on CNG, it was a national level decision to promote CNG use across the board. Without naming anybody, Modi said he knew on whose behalf Chaudhary had raised the issue in the house. When the scenes degenerated into pandemonium, the Speaker ruled that the members should give prior notice to the minister concerned before levelling an allegation so that the latter could come forward with a reply. He also expunged the objectionable remarks. When the ruling did not pacify the opposition members and the pandemonium continued, the Speaker adjourned the house for two hours. As against normal time of 12 noon, the house assembled early today at 0830 hrs to hold debate on vote-on-account for two sessions today. Bureau Report
