Buenos Aires, Argentina, June24: Gimnasia named an ultra-defensive line-up for their match in Buenos Aires on sunday (June 22), but their plans were in disarray when Fernando Cavenaghi and Esteban Fuertes put River 2-0 ahead in only six minutes. Andres D'Alessandro sealed victory in the 79th minute for River, who have been able to concentrate on the domestic front after being knocked out of the Libertadores in the quarter-finals. Velez Sarsfield also struck early on sunday as they beat Newell's Old Boys 1-0 to go second. Roberto Nanni scored after 10 minutes as Velez stayed two points behind River with two matches to play.
