Security Forces on Saturday claimed to have killed at least 19 Maoist extremists in the past 48 hours as the Maoists set off explosions near three government offices in the Kathmandu Valley.
The Nepalese defence ministry said in a statement that security forces killed at least ten Maoist extremists in encounters in different parts of the Himalayan Kingdom on Friday. Similarly the ministry said, nine Maoists were killed in encounters on Wednesday.
The statement came Friday as suspected Maoists set off explosions in the three district administration offices in the Kathmandu Valley.
The explosions went off in the chief district offices in Kathmandu district, Lalitpur district and Bhaktapur district, all located within the Kathmandu Valley. The damage in the three explosions, according to the police, was ''minimal''. The police said, efforts were being made to track down those responsible for the explosions.
The Maoists have been waging a violent campaign for just over six years to set up a communist regime in Nepal. Over 3,000 people have been killed in the Maoist insurgency during the period.
