Dindigul, Aug 22: A 45-year old Swedish national has been arrested on charges of overstaying on his tourist visa and was later remanded to judicial custody, police said today.
Police said Harold Davidson, who had come to India in 1992 on a tourist visa for six months, had purchased two acres of land at Mallayapuram and established an ashram named "Garuda Ashram".
Davidson had fought against noise pollution and had filed many cases and petitions against those who caused pollution, police said. The police said they arrested him after it was found that he had been overstaying in India though his visa had expired. He would be repatriated in a week's time, officials said.
Davidson also had filed a plea at the Madras High Court requesting that he be allowed to stay in India. But his plea was rejected. He was arrested at Kanchipuram where he was hiding and remanded by the Dindigul judicial magistrate last evening, police added. Bureau Report
