Mumbai, Nov 20: In a new twist to the criminal case of conspiracy hatched by Dawood Ibrahim gangsters to kill prominent politicians, including Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, the prosecution today urged a sessions court to conduct the trial in-camera. An application in this regard was moved by prosecutor Srikant Bhatt, who contended that he was urging for in-camera trial as the matter was sensitive.

Defence lawyers Majeed Memon and Parvez Memon opposed the prosecution's plea for in-camera trial. Sessions Judge D V Marathe deferred the matter until tomorrow for arguments.

The sessions judge had framed charges against six Dawood Ibrahim gangsters on October 17. They were charged with an offence under section 121-a IPC, a stringent law, namely, "waging war against nation". They are also charged with other offences including "conspiracy" under section 120-B IPC. The prosecution's case is that the gangsters had conspired to assassinate prominent political figures including Advani. They had also planned to strike key installations in Mumbai and elsewhere.

Two of them were arrested last year in a case of theft. During interrogation, they revealed their plans to kill prominent politicians and trigger explosions at important public places. Their disclosure led to the arrest of four others from Chennai and Bangalore. They are Javed Khan, Akbar Hussain, Srinivas Naidu, Zakir Hussain, Mohammed Saddiq and Farooq Ghani.
