New Delhi, Jan 29: Special Commissioner Krishan Kant Paul has been promoted to the director general rank and appointed as the new Police Commissioner of Delhi today, it was officially announced here. A Home Ministry spokesman said Mr Paul's appointment has been finalised and he will take over on January 31 from incumbent R S Gupta who is retiring on that day. An IPS officer of 1970 batch from the union territory cadre, Mr Paul has held key positions with the delhi police, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the research and development wing (raw). In the Delhi Police, he had served as the Deputy Commissioner of police south for several years. He also headed the crime branch and railways unit before taking over as the DCP Traffic. As the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Mr Paul had successfully supervised the investigations into the cricket betting and match fixing cases.


In IB, he worked in the unit that oversaw the VIP security, including that of the Prime Minister.


Thereafter, Mr Gupta will hand over the charge of the Commissioner of Police, Delhi to Dr Paul at a simple ceremony in the office of the Commissioner.
