Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the helmer behind the documentary "Blackfish", is directing the drama that centres on Leavey, a Marine in a K9 bomb sniffing unit in Iraq, and the bond with her dog, Rex, said The Hollywood Reporter.

They served two six-month tours and undertook over 100 missions before a detonation wounded them both.

Mara, 32, is playing the Marine, while Edie Falco is on board to play her mother. 28-year-old Felton, best known for playing Draco Malfoy in the "Harry Potter" film series, will play a veteran dog handler.

The film will shoot in Spain, South Carolina and New York.
