Dhaka, July 17: Bangladeshi officials today said the army might be called in to assist the civil administration if the flood situation worsens, as the flood waters spread to new areas disrupting normal life and road communication. At a inter-ministerial disaster management coordination committee meeting here, officials decided that the army would be called if the situation so warranted, state radio reported.

The meeting chaired by minister of disaster management and relief Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf was informed that so far 26 districts have been affected by the floods but held that the situation was under control. Army had earlier been called for brief period to protect Bhandarbari dam in the north and an embankment in eastern Comilla area.


With five more deaths yesterday, the toll in over six weeks of floods have crossed 50.

Floods, meanwhile, spread to new areas in central Manikganj and northern Pabna, Sirajganj, Gaibanda, Bogra and Natore districts.

Water has entered Chandpur district town threatening to inundate Madaripur district town and disrupted road communications from Dhaka to a number of districts.

Low lying areas of capital Dhaka and its neighbourhood have also been inundated due to floods. Media reports quoting official estimates says the flood triggered by heavy rains have affected as many as 26 districts, leaving 35,54,746 people marooned. According to a weather watch, this year's monsoon rain is 50 per cent higher than before and the flood extremity will increase if rain continues for one week more.
