Mumbai, June 20: Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani today expressed concern at the organisational state of affairs in the BJP and said the problem of factionalism should be resolved before the general elections in 2004. Addressing the BJP`s ‘chintan baithak’, Advani said that the organizational health is a major hazard for party`s `Mission 2004` and called upon the party workers to strengthen the party organisation and gear up for next year`s general elections. The Deputy Prime Minister fresh after his US-UK visit arrived a day late for the `chintan baithak` that commenced on June 17. Advani said new schemes should be started for farmers in all states to attract the voters and to project the party as more people-friendly. He recommended sops for the farmers nationwide. The BJP today reiterated that it favoured holding of the Lok Sabha polls "as per schedule" and going along with the NDA allies even as it sought to play the soft hindutva card demanding a ban on cow slaughter and asking the Centre to exert pressure on states to pass anti-conversion laws. Addressing a press conference today, BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu expressd satisfaction at the party`s position in different parts of the country. "We have good relations with allies with some exceptions. We are leading a 23-party coalition and we have to go along with the allies," he said. On Ayodhya, Naidu said: "Ayodhya is not an election issue but a matter of faith for us and we want a grand temple to be constructed there." Naidu said even though the party has not given up the three issues of Ram temple, Article 370 and Uniform Civil Code, but being a member of a 23-party NDA "we are committed to the coalition and the national agenda for governance". Naidu said the meeting also decided to have improved relations and coordination with RSS-inspired organisations. To a question on the differences between VHP and BJP on Ayodhya, he said: "It is not necessary that we agree with each other on every issue. Our views may differ". Referring to Muslims who had been keeping away from the party, he said BJP wanted to reach out to them and did not equate them with Pakistanis. "Pakistan is a separate country and we cannot link Muslims with that country," he said. In what is being seen as further rehabilitation of sidelined senior party leader Pramod Mahajan, the BJP president said he has been assigned to review the performance of all the 182 sitting BJP MPs in their respective constituencies. BJP president Venkaiah Naidu along with Advani would also have a separate sitting with the MPs to take stock of the party`s position in their constituencies. Bureau Report
