Kolkata, Sept 29: West Bengal Pradesh Congress today demanded that the ruling Left Front government release a 'white paper' on the poor financial condition of the state and also the steps taken to overcome the present fund crunch.
'Buddhadev Bhattacharjee government should release a white paper on its economic state of affairs and steps taken to overcome the state's miserable economy,” WBPCC president Pranab Mukherjee told newspersons adding that poor performance of the LF government had jeopardised all developmental activities in the state. Since the state government had gone ''bankrupt'', all the development projects, which required matching grants from the Centre, would suffer a serious setback because of state government's inability to contribute its share, he said.
Mukherjee also said that the state government should have thought twice before taking 'populist measures' including implementation of hike in salary recommended by the last pay commission when the state had not the ability to mobilise resources required for the purpose.
CPI(M) state secretary Anil Biswas, however, rejected the Congress demand and said that Mukherjee was well aware of the country's overall economic condition amidst which the LFgovernment had to work. ''Thus the question does not arise of releasing a white paper on the issue,” Biswas said.
Biswas said that LF government would continue to implement all its programmes for the poor and middle classes because of its commitment to them.
