Daman, Aug 30: Curfew was relaxed in most of the areas in Daman this morning for the day even as a total bandh was being observed to protest the government apathy in view of the police firing which claimed two lives yesterday, a senior official said here today.
"After a flag march by the police force this morning, curfew was relaxed in most parts, except three sensitive areas. However, Section 144 continues to be in force in entire Daman," collector Gyanendra Shrivastav said here.
Shrivastav said the situation would be reviewed in the evening and a decision would be taken accordingly.
Gujarat SRPF has been called from Vadodara and Surat to control the situation, chief of police V R Jethwa said, adding CRPF and RAF have also been called. Shops and business establishments remained closed and normal life was paralysed, official sources said.
Shrivastav said 10 people, including three policemen, were also injured in yesterday's incidents and were being treated at Hariya Hospital in Vapi and at Marwad hospital in Daman.
Police had yesterday opened fire on a mob, which hurled stones at the car of Union minister Harin Pathak. Curfew was imposed in the port city later as angry residents attacked a police station, stoned and torched vehicles while blaming the authorities for the collapse of a bridge on the Damanganga River killing 27 people. Last night a mob also set on fire two offices and a shop in Nani Daman area. Bureau Report
