Amritsar, July 27: Veteran Sikh leader, Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra was today elected as the 37th president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC). Tohra was elected president at the SGPC`s executive committee meeting held on July 20. Tohra will replace Kirpal Singh Badungar.

Acting president Alvinder Pal Singh Pakhoke proposed Tohra`s name which was seconded by Gurbux Singh Purrain and Pratap Singh.

Later his unanimous election was declared by Pakhoke. Earlier, former Punjab chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Parkash Singh Badal escorted Tohra to the SGPC head quarters.

Tohra returns to head the SGPC four years after he was unceremoniously ousted from it by members loyal to SAD president Praskah Singh Badal on March 16, 1999.
Tohra`s imminent reappointment as the SGPC president was a part of the unity deal forged between the two Akali stalwarts early this month.

The SGPC executive committee met thrice since July 21 to facilitate Tohra`s re-election as its president.

He was inducted in the SGPC executive committee on July 24 by co-option on a vacancy following the resignation of Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, his close associate, who had tendered resignation from the executive to pave the way for Tohra`s induction.

Tohra has been SGPC chief for over 25 years.
