Lucknow, Aug 23: Samajwadi Party today accused the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh of "persecuting and terrorising" party workers by "implicating them in false cases" and asked state Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri to direct the state government to stop the practice. In a memorandum submitted to the governor, the party alleged that the recent raids by the state excise department at the factories owned by the brother of SP general secretary Amar Singh at Ghaziabad were carried out with a view to "defaming Singh."

"The government could not unearth any incriminating documents during the raids," it claimed, adding similar actions were being taken against other party leaders and workers.

The memorandum, submitted by SP state president Ram Saran Das and MP Akhilesh Singh, also alleged that the police tried to "terrorise" the family members of Singh during the raids.

It warned that the SP would be forced to take to the streets if the state government did not stop its "act of repression".
