Dehra Dun, July 15: Uttaranchal Chief Minister N D Tiwari today announced that the Gorkha community would be included in the list of other backward classes in the state.
An official notification for including the Gorkhas in the
OBC list in the state would be issued in a month's time, he
told a delegation from the Gorkhali Sudhar Sabha, which met
him here this afternoon.
Lauding the role of Gorkhas, particularly in the armed forces, Tiwari said "we will be completing all the formalities including notification regarding OBC status to Gorkhas within one month."
Earlier, the delegation, led by Nationalist Congress Party state president Suryakant Dhasmana, submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in this regard and threatened to launch an agitation if the demand was not met immediately.
The Gorkha community was already enjoying the status of OBC in many states like Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram and a similar provision must be made in Uttaranchal also, the delegation told Tiwari.
The Uttaranchal Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and other Backward Classes Commission had also recommended to the state government that the Gorkha community should be included in list of OBCs in the state and that special programmes and schemes should be launched for them, it added.
