Uttarkashi, Sept 30: More than 25,000 people have already been evacuated from this ancient town in Uttaranchal devastated by massive landslides since last week. Uttarkashi sub-divisional magistrate Mahendra Prasad told A news agency today that already 32 buildings, including six hostels in an area of one sq km, had been crashed down in the landslides and 20 residential areas completely evacuated. He said property worth Rs eight crore had been destroyed due to the natural calamity and threat of more landlides loomed large over the town situated in the foothills of Varunavrata mountain.
Prasad said a team of scientists from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan geology were already here to assess the situation. Bureau Report
