New Delhi, Nov 13: The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Centre, Delhi government and the University of Delhi on a petition challenging the university's criteria for admission to engineering, medical and technical courses under the quota meant for students of national capital territory. Justice Vikramjit Sen asked the respondents to file their reply to the petition by January 19 next year. In their petition filed through counsel Rakesh Khanna, Government School Teachers' Association (GSTA), has sought quashing of Delhi University's admission criteria that restrict such admissions only to those students who have passed their 12th examination from schools located in Delhi. The petitioners contended that it has resulted into an anomaly as a large number of Delhi students passing 12th examination from schools located in sattelite towns like Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurgaon were being denied admission to these courses run by various colleges of Delhi University from the seats reserved for Delhi region students.

The present system ignores the fact whether a student has actually lived in delhi for at least a year or not and instead only takes note of his/her having passed 12th examination from a school located in the national capital, they submitted.

The petitioners sought direction to the respondents, particularly the University of Delhi, to admit all the students passing their 12th examination from Delhi schools as well as those residing here for more than five year, even if such students studied in schools located in the sattelite towns of Delhi.
