Bangalore, Sept 05: Government has placed an order with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for supply of 50 indigenous advanced light helicopters (ALHs), a top company official said today. "We have recently got an order from the government to supply about 50 ALHs," HAL chairman N R Mohanty told reporters here on the sidelines of the 12th national seminar on aerospace structures.

He said the indigenously developed ALH being manufactured at HAL in Bangalore would be delivered from 2005, but declined to comment on the specific number of aircraft to be supplied. Hal has already delivered 11 ALHs, powered by French turbomeca engines, to army, air force, navy and the coast guard and plans to supply 16 aircraft to various services during the current financial year.

On the acquisition of hawk Advance Jet Trainers (AJT) from British aerospace, Mohanty said, discussions would be held shortly on the timeframe for supply and production of 44 aircraft at HAL's Bangalore complex. He said HAL would negotiate for using indigenous components in the production of hawk in India, besides entering into a export commitment of 25 to 30 per cent components by BAE systems.

Mohanty said the Indian Air Force was happy with the progress made in the indigenous Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT) and HAL would shortly finalise the engine for the aircraft.
