Madrid, July 09: Real Madrid are set to sign Argentina international Gabriel Milito from Independiente, the Spanish first division club said yesterday, which will shore up their weakness in central defense.
Real Madrid failed to defend their European champions league title last season and poor defense, particularly the centrebacks, was the reason given by most pundits.
Milito will fill the gap left by Real's longserving captain and centreback Fernando Hierro, who was unceremoniously sacked along with coach Vicente Del Bosque last month which some sources have attributed to their opposition to the buying of England captain David Beckham.
Though the clubs have agreed a four-year deal, Real are yet to agree personal terms with the 22-year-old defender and he still needs to pass the required medical. "With this signing, the discussion about central defenders is closed," said Real's sporting director Jorge Valdano, who added it would be their final signing for next season.

Milito will be Real's second signing of the summer after Beckham was presented to supporters last Wednesday.
