Aizawl, Dec 15: Former Minister of State for Finance, Environment, Forests and Taxation Lalchamliana was elected speaker of Mizoram Assembly unopposed on the first day of the session of the newly-constituted house here today. Lalchamliana was declared elected unopposed by protem speaker R Khawpuithanga and was escorted to the speaker's chair by Chief Minister Zoramthanga and opposition leader Lal Thanhawla.

The new speaker sought whole-hearters in maintaining the sanctity of the house.


Zoramthanga, Lal Thanhawla, Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) chief Lalhmingthanga and P P Thawla of the Mara Democratic Front (MDF) congratulated Lalchamliana. Born on August 08, 1949 at Aizawl, Lalchamliana is Master of Arts in Political Science and a lecturer by profession.

Married to Nuchhungi, he has two sons and two daughters.

He joined the underground Mizo National Front (MNF) when the organisation launched independence movement against the Indian union and was lieutenant in the Mizo National Front (MNA).

He was arrested and came overground in 1974 and continued his studies since then. Bureau Report
