Mumbai, Dec 10: Parvez Zulfikar Qureshi, a 1993 bomb blast accused, has surrendered before a special court which had refused to extend his interim bail.
He was taken into custody yesterday and lodged in Central Prison adjoining the court.
Designated judge P D Kode ordered the jailor to produce the accused on December 11 and directed the prison doctor to examine Pervez and file a report on his condition on the same day.
Parvez who is suffering from peptic ulcers has been allowed to take medicines in jail.
The judge had earlier refused to extend Parvez's interim bail and directed him to surrender on December 9as the trial has reached its fag end.
Qureshi, in custody for more than six years, was granted bail on April 24 on a bond of Rs one lakh. However, he could not secure liberty because the amount was not affordable. On the request of his lawyer Subhash Kanse, the court reduced the amount to Rs 75,000 and he was set free on May 24.
As his condition deteriorated in jail, the court had referred him to the medical board of the government-owned J J Hospital for a check up and asked the doctors to opine whether he could be treated in custody.
The board had opined Qureshi's condition was better and that he could pull on with some tablets every day. As soon as the report was received, Qureshi was admitted to J J Hospital for eight days as he suffered acute pain. Thereafter, his interim bail was extended from time to time.
