Hyderabad, Dec 10: Andhra Pradesh Cabinet today approved implementation of a mid-day meal scheme in the state from January 2 next year. The scheme would cover children from class I to VII in all government and aided primary and upper primary schools, state information minister S Chandramohan Reddy told a post-cabinet meet media briefing here.

According to official sources, the scheme would entail an annual financial commitment of about Rs 240 crore and cover over 70 lakh children in 60,000 schools across the state.

Mid-day meals would be provided to children for 220 days in an year, sources said.

The scheme was first introduced in the state in 1982 but was discontinued in 1985.

The re-introduction of the scheme comes against the backdrop of Supreme Court taking a serious view of non-implementation of the scheme by the states on grounds of financial constraints.

The apex court, in its observations in September this year, had even warned that it would direct the Centre to stop transfer of funds to those states which fail to implement the mid-day meal scheme.
