Barbie and Ken `break up` after 43 years
New York, Feb 14: Barbie apparently never got the advice that one should not break up with a boyfriend right before Valentine`s Day.
New York, Feb 14: Barbie apparently never got the advice that one should not break up with a boyfriend right before Valentine's Day.
Marketing managers for the American icon, whose boyfriend for 43 years has been a doll named Ken, said she has split with her long-time partner and is now romancing an Australian surfer doll named Blaine.
Russell Arons, a spokesman for Mattel Inc., the company that produces Barbie, said the reason for the split was Barbie and Ken ''feel it's time to spend some quality time apart. Like other celebrity couples, their Hollywood romance has come to an end,'' Arons said. He added that they would remain friends.
The prominent US dolls, which can accurately be described as even more plastic than other US celebrities, first appeared together in advertisements together in 1961. But they never married, much to the chagrin of many Barbie collectors.
Arons would not say whether Blaine would replace Ken as Barbie's boyfriend. It also wasn't known whether the two planned to exchange Valentine's Day gifts today.
