The Center, Tuesday night, issued a warning to the Tamil Nadu government, asking it to rectify the wrongs committed in the arrest of former chief minister M Karunanidhi and two Union ministers on June 30. ``The Cabinet felt that immediate action by the Central government is required to ensure restoration of all constitutional guarantees such as democracy, freedom of press, principles of federalism, human rights and right of legitimate political activity``, law and justice minister Arun Jaitley told newspersons after a meeting of the Union Cabinet.

“The state government has been asked to identify the officials guilty of committing excesses on the political leaders, and proceed against them as per the law,” Jaitley said. “He said the home ministry will formally send the warning to the Tamil Nadu government and set a deadline for compliance. Further action against the state government will be decided if it fails to follow the Centre`s directive,” he added indicating that the government was keeping the option of imposing Presiden`t rule open. He said that the Cabinet, at its two and a half hour meeting, had discussed the detailed report of the three-member team sent by the home ministry which indicted the Tamil Nadu government and state police for all violations of law, constitutional procedures and guarantees.
The Law And Justice Minister said that the `warning` was being sent to the state government in consonance with the Justice Sarkaria Commission report on Centre-State relations and the Supreme Court judgement in the Bommai case. Bureau Report
