Mumbai, Aug 04: The rupee rallied against US dollar on the interbank foreign exchange (forex) here today on heavy inflow in the form of export booking and closed sharply higher. A sharp fall in dollar against the single european unit, the euro, prompted exporters to book heavily, dealers said.
However, the Indian currency closed weaker against other major world currencies like the British pound, the euro and the Japanese yen.
The rupee opened distinctly firm at Rs 46.13/14 per dollar and after moving in a range of Rs 46.1200- 46.1400, ended at the opening level of Rs 46.13/14 per dollar, sharply higher than the previous close of Rs 46.1650/1750 per dollar.

In the cross-currency trade, the Indian currency started weak against the British pound at Rs 74.30/33 per pound and fell further to end Rs 74.36/38 per pound, showing a steep fall over last Friday's close of Rs 74.00/74.02 per pound.
The rupee was also sharply weaker against the euro at Rs 52.13/15 per euro as compared to the previous level of Rs 51.58/60.
Against the Japanese currency, the Indian unit fell to Rs 38.40/42 per 100 yen as against the last close of Rs 38.31/33 per 100 yen.
