Jammu, June 26: President A P J Abdul Kalam, who arrived here on a three-day visit to the state, today lauded the role played by security forces in fighting militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking after presenting colours to Jammu and Kashmir Police at Sher-e-Kashmir Police Academy, Kalam stressed that there was a need to modernise the security forces in order to enable them to counter terrorism effectively.

The President also suggested that India must develop its own operational system and software for national security purposes.
"We must develop operational system and software for our own national security because there are chips which have invisible data inside and these can be used for national security matters," he said.
Security forces and law and order agencies, he said, must have their own operational system instead of the Internet as certain information, if accessed through internet and commercially available operational systems, would prove detrimental to national security.
Suggesting that additional technologies be inducted into state police and other security forces like hi-tech computers and micro processors with faster chips, Kalam said these can become important modules for the forces during operations.
He also stressed the need for coordination between police of different states and security forces through these technologies for better efficiency.
The President emphasised that Kashmir is and will remain an integral part of India. Earlier, Kalam arrived at Jammu Airport by a special aircraft around 0900 hours and was received by the Governor S K Sinha, chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his cabinet colleagues and senior civil and security officers.
He was given a rousing reception by children on his arrival at Udhampur. He will address the convocation ceremony of the Jammu University this evening. The President will visit some important religious places in the three main regions of the state - Vaishnodevi shrine (Jammu region), Hazratbal (Kashmir valley) and a monastery (Ladakh region) during the course of his visit.
The President will also visit a camp of displaced Kashmiri Pandits near Jammu. Bureau Report
