Jerusalem, Sept 11: Israeli leadership and media today demanded expulsion of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, despite US objections, in the wake of twin suicide bombings which killed 15 Israelis on Tuesday. "US approval for this (Arafat's expulsion), in case we asked for it, would be almost impossible to obtain....there are some situations in which we have to make decisions that are completely cut off from outside influence," Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom told the army radio.

Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz also said the Palestinian leader should be expelled. "Expel Arafat immediately, without delay," he said. Requesting the same, mainstream Israeli press went one step ahead and demanded killing of the Palestinian leader.

"We must kill Yasser Arafat, because the world leaves us no alternative," the Jerusalem Post said.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who cut short his visit to India, was to convene his security cabinet later in the day to decide on a response to the suicide bombings and the comments came ahead of this. In West Bank, Palestinian premier-designate Ahmed Qureia appointed an eight-member emergency cabinet. The Parliament's meeting, scheduled for today, was postponed till Sunday as many legislators were denied Israeli travel permits.

Meanwhile, in a counter-terrorism offensive, Israeli soldiers demolished 15 homes early today in south Gaza. They also took control of the seventh floor of the Palestinian culture ministry just 300 metres from Arafat's headquarters.
