Police shot dead one person in the main city in Gujarat when they opened fire to disperse clashing mobs of Hindus and Muslims, police said on Wednesday. The Tuesday night clash in Ahmedabad, which follows India's worst religious riots in a decade, coincided with the death of a woman burned in her home in an incident in a town north of the city on Monday.
"One person was killed and six injured in the eastern part of Ahmedabad when police fired to disperse mobs of Hindus and Muslims pelting stones at each other," a senior police official said.
A 75-year-old woman died of burns sustained when a mob set fire to her house in Viramgam, the official added.
