New Delhi, Aug 24: In a move to normalise milk supply in the Capital, Mother Dairy today increased its procurement price by 10 per cent from Rs 15.50 to Rs 17 per
kilogram of mixed milk while the consumer price of liquid milk has been left untouched.
"Mother Dairy does not intend to alter the existing consumer prices for liquid milk due to increased procurement price,” a spokesperson of Mother Dairy Foods Processing Ltd said in a release here.
While mother dairy has spared no effort to increase milk procurement from dairy cooperatives, it was not possible to overcome the inevitable drop in supply of milk in peak summer as the situation was compounded by cumulative impact of three years of drought, he said.
The drought in Australia and tight supply of milk powders abroad has hardened international prices of milk powders. Domestic prices of milk powder are also on the rise and private diary plants have found it "lucrative to grab milk available in the villages to manufacture dairy items", he said.
Also the spurt in demand for milk in August on account of ‘Rakshabandhan’ and ‘Janmasthami’ had "severely constricted" supply of fresh milk to dairy cooperatives and consequently to Mother Dairy, the statement said.
"It is expected that various steps taken by Mother Dairy should contribute to normalisation of the supply of liquid milk in the capital in the next few days,” it said.
