"A woman was the only survivor of a plane crash into an icy river in northern Germany which killed eight people," police said on Wednesday.
"A twin-engine light aircraft of the type "Britten-Norman Islander" plunged into the near-freezing waters of the Weser river, near Bremerhaven," police said.
Crew members of a ferry raised the alarm after seeing the accident.
Bodies of three people were fished out of the crash although only one of them a woman was resuscitated in hospital, while the other two were declared dead.
A search was underway for the other six occupants of the plane, the wreckage of which was lying seven metres (22 feet) underwater. The other passengers, including a small child, are still missing as night falls in the area, but police believe that there is no chance of them being found alive due to the near freezing temperatures in the river.
The plane had taken off from Bremerhaan-Luneort airport at 10.00am local time (0900 GMT) bound for Wangeroode on the North Sea coast. Eight passagers and the pilot were on the flight.
The accident occurred shortly after take-off and the cause is unknown.
