Poisoned porridge killed at least 25 people and hospitalized 80 others over the weekend in central Ivory Coast, newspaper reports said.
The thick corn porridge, a traditional breakfast meal in the West African nation, was prepared Friday by a woman in the small village of Labokro, about 30 kilometers from the capital Yamoussoukro, the Independent Soir Info said on Saturday.
Around 110 of Labokro's 2,000 inhabitants ate the porridge and soon began experiencing severe abdominal pains, diarrhea and bouts of vomiting, the government paper Fraternite-Matin said.
About 80 people were evacuated to a hospital in Yamoussoukro. At least three people fell into a coma. Soir info said the husband, two children and other of the woman who prepared the meal were among the dead.
Paramilitary police were investigating the deaths but they have not yet determined how the porridge became poisoned.
