A day after Congress indicated its willingness to back president K R Narayanan for a second term in office, the CPI (M) on Tuesday said it was not averse to his renomination.
CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechuri told a press conference in Shimla that the conduct of Narayanan as President had been very good and CPI (M) has no inhibitions about him.
The CPI (M) would react positively if he emerged as a consensus candidate, Yechuri said.
He said the arithmetic of the electoral college for presidential poll was such that neither NDA and its allies nor the Opposition has majority.
The CPI(M) leader said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee should start the process of consultations and suggest names of probable candidates for arriving at a consensus.
