Assam Assembly polls may not be free and fair: Sangma

NCP General Secretary Purna A Sangma on Sunday alleged that the AGP government was preventing other parties from holding public meetings for the coming assembly elections in the state and apprehended that the polls may not be free and fair.
Referring to the NCP public meeting on Saturday at Kothiatoli, falling under chief minister's Barbampur constituency, Sangma alleged that the district administration and police assisted AGP workers to destroy the stage, banners and posters of the party.
''This shows the Asom Gana Parishad was shaky and apprehensive of the power of the new front formed yesterday comprising the NCP, Asom Jatiya Sanmilan, Asom Gana Sangram Parished, Purbanchaliya Loka Parishad, Labour Party of Assam and Janata Dal (S),” Sangma added.
The former Lok Sabha speaker said that the incident would be brought to the notice of the Election Commission and union home minister expressing concern at the ''complete failure of law and order as well as the connivance of the administration to promoting and protecting the AGP.”
Referring to his Z-category security status, Sangma asserted that the Assam government provided him with only a PSO instead of the stipulated security bandobast he was entitled to on his arrival in Guwahati. Bureau Report
