Ahmedabad, May 28: In a volte face, a key witness in the Best Bakery massacre case retracted his original statement to police and told the sessions court that all the 20 accused were innocent and they had rescued his family during last year's communal riots in Gujarat.
Lal Mohammed, whose house was the first to be burnt on March 1 last year, submitted before the fast track court judge H U Mahida yesterday that the accused had actually saved nearly 65 minority community persons, 18 of whom were his own relatives from the rioting mob, court sources said here today.
Mohammed told the court that two of the accused had sheltered them inside their house when he ran for his life after a mob went on a rampage there, sources added.
He further submitted that the two accused had taken him out the next day from the riot-hit 'Hanuman Tekra' locality to a safe area--Ekta Nagar.
Lal Mohammed also hailed his Hindu neighbours, saying their act of saving Muslims was a "lifetime debt and he would never forget it".
