Chennai, Oct 31: Describing the attack by miscreants on the house of AIADMK's State Unit Secretary in Bangalore yesterday as a "reaction" to Supreme Court's observations against Karnataka in the Cauvery issue, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa last night demanded the S M Krishna government to "ensure safety and security of Tamils in the state." Condeming the attack, in a statement here she said "...This act of vandalism and criminal assault is surely the handiwork of disgruntled sectarian anti-social elements venting thier venom on innocent Tamils in Karnataka as a reaction to Supreme Court's observations against Karnataka." She said this was in contrast to "peaceful situation prevailing in Tamil Nadu where Kannadigas live in total peace and security with no fear of attack on their person and property and even opposition leaders enjoy full protection."
A group of miscreants, at least one of them speaking in Tamil and another in Kannada, ransacked the residence of the AIADMK functionary, V Pugazhendi, injuring his wife and mother-in-law, but police had said it was not immediately known whether the incident was related to Cauvery agitation. Jayalaithaa said the attack on Pugazhendhi's house was apparently for the reason that he had made an appeal in the local press to resume screening of Tamil programmes on television channels in Karnataka. This was a dastardly attack and deserved to be condemned in strongest terms.

"Safeguarding the lives and properties of the Tamil population in the state which is in a minority is the bounden duty of the state government of Karnataka and they should take all steps to provide such protection and to restore the confidence of the Tamils," she added.
