Tezpur, Dec 28: Ulfa ideologue Bhimkanta Burhagohain today appealed to both his outfit and Union government to agree on a ceasefire and solve the problems through negotiations. Before being produced in court, Burhagohain said New Delhi should halt its military action against the outfit while the Ulfa should also hold its guns to sit across each other for a solution to the vexed issue .
Asked if he would surrender after Bhutan handed him over to the Indian authorities after he gave himself up to the Royal Bhutan Army, Burhagohain said he was contemplating it but was yet to take a decision as he had no communication with Ulfa chairman Arobinda Rajkhowa and `C-in-C' Paresh Barua to take their opinion on it.
He also said that he had earlier pointed out to both Rajkhowa and Barua to shift the Bhutan camps to a safer country, but they did not respond.
Burhagohain, called `Mama' by the cadres, termed the Bhutan army offensive against the Ulfa, NDFB and KLO as a "betrayal on the part of the Himalayan kingdom as we had talks with the Bhutan government on shifting our camps since 2001".
"Ultimately under the guidance of the Indian Army, they (Bhutan government) launched their army operation against us. We had never imagined that we would be attacked when the talks were on with the Bhutan government.” The ideologue also asserted that the destruction of the Ulfa camps in Bhutan would not demolish the outfit as it was connected by internet to other countries to carry on with its activities.
Unlike before, he said, the Ulfa was now giving more priority to setting up camps in Myanmar over Bangladesh. Bureau Report
