New Delhi, June 30: Concerned over large-scale illegal occupation of Wakf property, the Centre today directed the states and union territories to speed up survey of all such property to protect them from encroachments. Presiding over the 46th meeting of the Central Wakf Council here, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Satyanarayan Jatiya asked the council to take immediate action against such encroachments.
He said there was need for quick disposal of the cases by Wakf tribunals and added that steps could be taken to remove legal hurdles in this regard.
Jatiya said the Centre has provided Rs 23.82 crore as grant-in-aid to the Central Wakf Council for development of Wakf property. The council, in turn, has advanced loans to state Wakf boards on very easy terms for construction of hospitals, hostels and income-generating projects.
While 118 such projects have been completed, 50 others were in progress, he said.
Referring to the education scheme of the Central Wakf Council, run with the income generated from Wakf property, the minister asked the council to set up a girls' hostel in each district headquarter for promotion of education among Muslim girls.
The council has helped about 600 NGOs for promoting vocational education among Muslims, he said and suggested setting up of a Wakf educational pool.
