Chennai, Sept 24: World no. 12 Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand would defend his title in the 2004 Tata Open, one of the season opener on the atp tour. Srichaphan, who won the title this year beating Karol Kucera of Slovakia in straight sets, has confirmed participation in the next edition to be held here from January 5 to 11, a release from Tata, the sponsors of the lone ATP tour event in India, said here yesterday.
"This year started off on a great note for me having won the Tata Open 2003. It was great to win after being the runner up in 2002," said Srichaphan.
He said his performance through this year had been very solid and reaching the pre-quarterfinals of the US Open had greatly boosted his confidence.

"I might lose a match but I love to win the crowd. That is why I enjoy playing in Asian countries, where the crowds are behind me. The spectators at chennai are very enthusiastic. It is a pleasure to come back and I hope to retain the Tata Open title," the release quoted him.



The talented right hander is a huge celebrity in his home country and was named the Thai of the year in 2002. After winning the Tata Open 2003, Srichaphan's performance this year and most recently in the hard court season, showed he is raring to win in Chennai again.



Romit Chaterji, vice-president, corporate affairs of Tata, said "Srichaphan's decision to return to Chennai augured well for the tournament.
