New Delhi, Mar 27: Workers in Delhi and its satellite towns are on a strike today to press for minimum wages of Rs five thousand, abolition of contract labour system and construction of permanent dwellings in JJ clusters. The strike call was given by Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU) and All India Coordination Committee of Trade Unions (AICCTU)
S P Bhardwaj, president of CITU said that more than 35 lakh workers from Delhi and adjoining districts were likely to participate in the general strike and take out processions. The sky rocketing prices of essential commodities during the last several years have seriously eroded the living standards of the workers and therefore CITU has demanded that the minimum wages should be at least Rs five thousand per month plus dearness allowance, he said.
"The policies of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation have played havoc with the interests of workers,” Bharadwaj said. The unrestricted entry of MNCs and removal of quantitative restrictions on imports has led to the closure of many industries throwing workers out of job", he said.
Echoing similar views, Mohan Lal, general secretary of CITU said, "Workers are in a pitiable condition. Contract system should end and exploitation of workers especially women workers should end." A S Sidhu, vice president of AICCTU demanded better housing facilities for the industrial workers in addition to the flexible and humane working hours.
"Permanent dwelling, health centres and social security for workers is our priority", he said.
