Set 199 runs off a minimum of 23 overs to win, India were 73 for
two in their second innings when the match was called off after 16
overs.
India had led by 86 on the first innings after they were dismissed for 409 before lunch after starting the day on 362 for six.
However, Australia piled on 284 for three from just 62 overs in their second innings to set up a declaration after tea and give themselves a slim chance of victory.
Matthew Hayden (99), Ricky Ponting (50), Damien Martyn (66 not out) and Steve Waugh (56 not out) all made half-centuries for Australia.
India suffered an early scare when openers Akash Chopra and Virender Sehwag were dismissed by Nathan Bracken in the second over but Rahul Dravid (43 not out) and Vangipurappu Laxman (24 not out) held out.
The second Test in the four-match series starts in Adelaide on Friday.
